What Exactly is a Fascia Board?

A simple way of keeping your roof in good shape is to keep tabs on its condition. This is especially important for those components that aren’t usually given enough attention. Take the fascia board, for example. It’s the material running along the edge of your roof, the finishing trim that connects to the edge of the rafters. But what exactly is the point of a fascia board?

  1. The fascia board holds the gutters in place. It’s basically the “foundation” of your gutters. Without the fascia, there won’t be a sturdy and convenient spot for mounting a gutter system. But because of its location – and the gutters’ susceptibility to clogging – the fascia board runs the risk of sustaining moisture damage. It should be checked regularly for signs of mold and rot because once it’s weakened, the fascia board may cause the gutters to pull away from the roofline. Here’s a pro tip: always keep your gutters clear of leaves and other loose debris to prevent rainwater from backing up and seeping through the fascia board.
  2. The fascia board helps prevent leaks. Without the fascia board, there would be a wide, elongated opening just below your roofing system. This makes it easier for wind-driven rain to enter the area underneath your roof, creating leaks that may find their way into your home’s interior. Birds, rodents and insects may also use this opening as an entry point to your home. Having a fascia board in place can help prevent this, but you also have to choose a good, strong material for it. Most fascia boards are available in wood, vinyl and aluminum.
  3. The fascia board makes your roofline look good. You’ll find that the fascia provides a smooth and finished look to your roofline. And since its boards are available in different colors and materials, you can also use it to accentuate the style and exterior palette of your home. Of course, the fascia is usually obscured by the gutters, but it’s that attention to detail that can make your home shine.
