Is It Worth Replacing Your Gutters Along With Your Roof?

Having your roof replaced requires careful preparation to ensure its success and get the most out of your investment. While planning this home improvement project, you might also be wondering whether your gutters should also be replaced. The decision to go for it – or not – will depend on the overall condition of your gutters and downspouts.

Proceeding With the Gutter Replacement

Your current gutters may look relatively intact, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t sustained damage since they were first installed. For instance, if they were installed at the same time as your old roof, it’s usually better to have it completely replaced since they may already be near the end of their lifespan. You can also take this as an opportunity to upgrade to better quality gutter materials that are more durable and reliable against different weather conditions.

You can still choose to replace them later if it still has a few years left, but then you’ll have to go through the whole process of arranging for an installation job. This means finding a capable contractor, scheduling an appointment and arranging to be present during the installation all over again.

Holding Off on Replacing Your Gutters

Having your gutters replaced during a roof replacement, however, isn’t always required. This is especially true if they still look to be in great shape. Just to be sure, though, you can ask your roofing contractor to inspect them thoroughly prior to roof replacement. A complete replacement won’t be necessary if they found issues with the gutter system that can be fixed through simple repairs.

A complete gutter replacement may only be required if the damage is extensive to the point that repairs are no longer a viable option. The surface of the gutter material might be too corroded or have too many dents or cracks that’s causing the system to leak every time it rains. Too much sagging is also an indication that the gutter system needs to be replaced, especially if some of the sections have started pulling away from the fascia boards.
