How to Keep Your Gutters Functional Year-Round

Properly functioning gutters are essential for maintaining the integrity of your property. Without proper maintenance, your home can become at risk of damage from landscape erosion, foundation cracks, water damage and more. That’s why it’s crucial to take proactive steps to keep your gutters clean and functional all year round. Read on as Balken Roofing, one of the leading local roofing contractors shares some tips.

Check for Blockages

Leaves, twigs and other debris can collect in your gutters. Be on the lookout for them when you perform a quick and simple visual inspection of your roof. Have these obstructions cleared as soon as possible to ensure the flow of water runoff toward the downspouts and away from your property. You can climb up the ladder and scoop the debris out, but if you want to be on the safe side, you can either use a cleaning device with a long attachment or have the pros do the gutter cleaning for you.

Test for Leaks

Leaks in a gutter system can cause serious issues. Test for leaks periodically to ensure they are functioning correctly. Some common signs of a leak are water marks near or on the gutter system, mold growth and water coming out from beneath the gutter trough. It’s crucial to fix the problem right away if you notice any of these signs. Tap a local contractor known for offering quality roofing services to do the job.

Clear out the Downspouts

Don’t forget the downspouts when you inspect and clean your gutters. Use a high-pressure hose or a special cleaning device to clean the downspouts. Be sure to run the water through the end of the downspout until the water runs clear.

Install Gutter Guards

Want to minimize the need to clean your gutters? Consider equipping them with guards or covers. These gutter protection systems catch leaves and other debris, only allowing water to pass through to the gutters. They come in many different types and sizes, so be sure to check which ones are the right fit for your gutters.
