All About Roof Soffits

Soffits are located by the underside of structures such as arches, balconies, or overhanging eaves. They act as a ventilation unit for your attic and they keep warm moisture from penetrating your attic or ceiling, which usually causes condensation and molding. That is why keeping your soffits in good condition is essential in quality roofing — preventing not only mold formation, but also pests from entering your attics.

If you think you might need to replace your soffit boards, the prices depend on your home’s overhang, the difficulty in installing it, the size of your building, and your choice of materials. It also matters how much other developers make cost-estimations in fitting soffits. In this post, your local roofing contractors will discuss what roof soffits do for your home.

Are Soffits Worth the Cost?

Yes, but why? Simple: they allow for continuous ventilation in your attic. They prevent heat buildup and moisture from ruining your attic or ceiling. Often, allowing the development of moisture in your attic contributes to faster deterioration of your whole roofing structure because of rotting and poor air quality. They also keep animals and insects from entering and nesting in your attic. This prevents the damage that these unwanted critters might cause to your roof or your attic’s air quality.

Soffits on residential roofing systems can be made of either wood or aluminum, but the most common choice is vinyl because of its durability. There are things you can do to make sure that your soffits and roofing system in top shape:

  • Clean and free your gutters from debris, like dry leaves, snow, etc.
  • Make sure that your gutter’s size is appropriate for the roof.
  • Seal and caulk your soffits to ensure that water and moisture cannot seep into its crevices.
  • Inspect your soffits for nesting. There are times when insects like bees and hornets nest inside soffits.
  • Maintain your ventilating units in your attic. Clean your attic fans and make sure that they work fine.

It is important to make sure that you take good care of your whole roofing system, including soffits. This can save you from having to replace your whole roof just because you took your soffits for granted. To this end, trust Balken Roofing for a roofing job well done.
